Located in the busy inner-city residential, tourist and business precinct, the restoration of this heritage-listed building proved to be quite a challenge. This project required a complete six week-shut down, with works taking place 24/7 for the entire six week period. Meticulous programming and methodology were required to ensure the safety of all workers and railway staff due to the operational, electrified rail network in which our site was located. The scope of the project included removal and replacement of all roofing materials, installation of a new 79m fascia on Platform 1, installation of new fascia on Platforms 2/3 awning, raising of the existing awning structure on Platforms 2/3, demolition and replacement of existing stairs, refurbishment of heritage-listed bench seats, removal of lead paint and various upgrades to services.

The platforms had to be raised due to accessibility and safety reasons. This is where the expertise of Hutchies shone. We created an innovative process to raise the platforms using pre-cast coping panels. This has now been adopted as a Queensland Rail platform raising standard.

Restoration of the heritage building has preserved a vital piece of Queensland's architectural and social history, thus enhancing the tourism potential of the South Bank precinct and increasing the revenue potential for Queensland Rail. The team successfully completed the upgrade works within budget, on-time and with minimal disruption to the community.

Hutchinson Builders was engaged by Queensland Rail on a design and construct basis to carry out the upgrade of Platform 1 at Milton Station. The intent of the platform upgrade was to enhance the visual appearance of the platform in order for it to be utilised by Queensland Rail and Translink as the primary platform catering for Suncorp Stadium events. After completing a number of similar projects for Queensland Rail across Brisbane, Hutchinson Builders were confident in delivering a successful project.

This particular project was unique to Hutchies as we were already working on-site building the new transit-oriented-development (TOD) 'The Milton' above the station.

There are a number of challenges that go hand in hand with working in an environment where the public and electrification is in close proximity to construction activities, but there were also a number of challenges that were unique to this particular project.

The works undertaken at Milton Station have successfully rejuvenated an old and run down platform into what is now an aesthetically pleasing, fit-for-purpose events platform.

Hutchinson Builders gained an abundance of skills and knowledge amongst our people and through recent experience on previous Queensland Rail projects Buranda Station and South Brisbane Station. Queensland Rail contracted Hutchies again to deliver Sandgate Station, one of the busiest on the north side of Brisbane residing by Moreton Bay. The project involved critical planning and sequencing of construction works within the rail corridor and public areas for over a 12 month period and involved careful interfacing with Queensland Rail to ensure commuters were safe to access and egress the station at all times and were unaffected by travel delays throughout the project's duration.
